House Officer, University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, Port Harcourt, Nigeria (1999-2001)
In the Departments of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics, General Surgery, and Internal Medicine, rotations lasting 3 months each were carried out. In each Department, the day-to-day care for patients through history taking & examination, performing investigations and making diagnosis were performed. Intravenous delivery of medications, blood transfusions and assistance at surgical procedures were my duties as a house officer. During ward rounds, theatre sessions and clinical meetings, case presentations were made and formed the basis for updating my knowledge and skills. I participated in all these and in the teaching of medical and nursing students thus earning the confidence, skills and knowledge required to effectively manage patients and teach clinical students.

National Youth Service Corps: Obstetrics & Gynaecology Department, University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, Port Harcourt (2001-2002)
I served as a Research Officer in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology and was appointed the Field Officer and member of the University of Port Harcourt team for the Magpie Trial & Magpie Trial Follow-Up Study Collaborative Group, Oxford University, United Kingdom. (The Magpie Trial and follow up study (1998-2003) was an international multicentre randomized double blind, placebo-control study evaluating the use of Magnesium Sulphate in the management of Pre-eclampsia. There were 175 centres in 33countries. Nigeria had 10 centres) I went on follow up visits to the 109 patients who were recruited for the study between 2002-2003 to collect and document their follow-up data as required by the collaborative study. I learnt how to practically collaborate in a multi centre study during this period. The process of publication for the Magpie Trial and follow up study began during this period.

Residency in Obstetrics & Gynaecology: University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, Port Harcourt (2003 – 2008)
a. Registrar in Obstetrics &Gynaecology: University of Port Harcourt
Teaching Hospital, Port Harcourt (2003 – 2006)
The Residency Training postings in general Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Urology, Anaesthesia, Neonatology at the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) and General Surgery began in 2003. In-patient and outpatient care formed the basis of the duties assigned and implemented during the daily work schedule and call period. Enhanced knowledge and skills for vaginal deliveries, and minor surgical procedures were earned during this period as a specialist registrar. The departmental schedule for registrars included presentation of cases at clinical meetings, journal club meetings and postgraduate seminars. I was selected as the Associate Editor of the Nigerian Journal of Medicine and member of the Prevention of Mother To Child Transmission of HIV/AIDS Committee and assisted in awareness creation and sensitization of students in the University. I also participated in other research activities and was involved in the publication of 7 scientific papers during this period. I was a research assistant for the Gynuity Ventures Study of misoprostol for incomplete miscarriage in 2003. I served in the local organizing committees of the Society of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of Nigeria (SOGON), then International College of Surgeons (ICS) conferences held in Port Harcourt. SOGON is dedicated to the improvement of women’s health and rights and the reduction of maternal and newborn mortality, as well as advancing the science and practice of Gynaecology and Obstetrics in Nigeria while the ICS is a global organization dedicated to bringing together surgeons and surgical specialists of all nations, races, and creeds to promote surgical excellence for the benefit of all of mankind and to foster fellowship worldwide.

b. Senior Registrar in Obstetrics & Gynaecology: University of Port Harcourt
Teaching Hospital, Port Harcourt (2006 – 2008)
As senior registrar, supervised by the consultant; I was responsible for the daily management of the unit’s outpatient, antenatal, postnatal and Gynaecology clinics and wards. I assisted the consultants and supervised the House Officers, Junior Residents, Medical and Nursing students; ensuring that bedside tutorials, the end of posting continuous assessment tests, as well as the MB.BS. Part III examinations for the students were effectively done. Regular presentations at clinical meeting, hospital grand rounds and unit meetings were great opportunities to impact knowledge thus consolidating my knowledge and skills earned as a senior registrar. I conducted the pre-part II National Postgraduate Medical College research for my dissertation on anaemia during this period and was the project secretary for the University of Port Harcourt Research Group for the study of adolescent reproductive health. Prof Friday Okonofua; the Program officer for Ford Foundation Reproductive Health division visited us during this period, setting the stage for multiple research proposals that would later on yield groundbreaking research and bountiful published articles. I served in the local organizing committees of the SOGON, then ICS conferences held in Port Harcourt. I was Chief Resident for six months in 2007; compiled the departmental annual report and presented in 2008 as well as published 5 articles during this period.

Lecturer I, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, College of Health Sciences, University of Port Harcourt (2009– 2012)
As Lecturer I, lectures, tutorials, bedside teaching and demonstration of clinical skills in general Obstetrics and Gynaecology to the fifth-year medical students were carried out. I was the assistant coordinator for the fifth-year medical students as well as the Assistant Warden for the clinical hostels in the University and Member of Editorial Board of The Nigerian Health Journal. I was involved in Community Obstetrics for a one-year period in the Institute of Maternal and Child Health. The site was K-dere, Gokana LGA, Rivers State. We conducted researches and activities related to Maternal and Child Health and implemented programs for improving maternal and child health. We also supervised undergraduate students who came for their community postings. We presented our findings at State, National and International fora. I published 6 articles during this period and contributed chapters to textbooks.

Senior lecturer, Department of Obstetrics &Gynaecology, College of Health Sciences, University of Port Harcourt 2012 till 2018.
As a senior lecturer, teaching and conducting examinations for the fifth-year clinical students and resident doctors were carried out. From 2015 – 2016, I was the senior lecturer coordinating the teaching and examinations of these students. As a member of the OSCE Curriculum Development Committee for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, along with other members; we reviewed the curriculum of our students in line with the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) Model and developed a suitable OSCE model for the Department.
In December 2015, I enrolled and gained admission to study for the Masters in Reproductive Health program of the World Bank Supported Centre of Excellence for Reproductive Health Innovation domiciled at the University of Benin. The part time program spans 3 years; I have completed all course work including internship and dissertation. The dissertation defense is in September 2018.
I was appointed acting director and supervised the Youth Friendly Centre of the University of Port Harcourt from September 2016 till date during which period, I conducted trainings on Reproductive Health for students and staff, as well as during orientation for newly admitted students. I am involved in the appraisal and promotion of Lecturer I to Senior Lecturer position in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Faculty of Clinical Sciences. I am a member of the Advisory Board of the Port Harcourt Business School – 2017 till date. I carry out any other duties assigned to me by my head of department, Dean of Faculty, Provost of College and Vice Chancellor of the University which include representation at meetings, serving in panels to investigate and discipline erring staff, as well as draw up protocols for the department, faculty, college and university such as the available protocols in the department for the management of postpartum haemorrhage, eclampsia and gestational diabetes mellitus.
I participate in the conduct of research in my Department and Faculty as well as supervision of the dissertation for the senior registrars as a fulfillment for the Fellowship examinations for the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, where I am an External Examiner. I also supervise dissertation of the MPH students in the Department of Public health. I am the Co-Principal Investigator and secretary of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Maternal Newborn Implementation Research Study Group; and the Principal Investigator of the World Diabetes Foundation (WDF) Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) Control Program in the Niger Delta; this is a project implementing access and advocacy interventions to promote diabetes prevention and improve GDM outcomes among rural and urban poor women in Rivers State. So far, 18,000 pregnant women have been screened for GDM, 598 healthcare providers trained and 30 facilities supported to provide GDM Care. I am also the Principal Investigator of the Pfizer supported MWAN Safe Childbirth Initiative in sub-Saharan Africa; implementing advocacy and access interventions to improve maternal health in Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon and Zambia. I published 28 articles within this period. I was also the departmental Welfare Officer/Treasurer and supported undergraduate students in the extra- curricular activities.
My major contribution to knowledge includes improving maternal health and reducing maternal morbidity and mortality through research and advocacy aimed at increasing knowledge and awareness of danger signs in pregnancy as well as the role of antenatal care utilization and family planning as tools for enhancing maternal health. I have actively participated in increasing the general body of knowledge on awareness, prevention and early detection of gestational diabetes mellitus through implementing advocacy and care interventions such as giving lectures, training of health care providers, strengthening health care facilities, health care systems, community mobilisations, advocacy talks and participating in activities of professional associations and non-governmental organisations.
I enhance Women’s Health through research and education on women’s wellbeing, violence against women, family life education, health promotion activities and education about healthy lifestyle in the prevention and management of gestational diabetes and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.
